Sister Cities International (SCI) ST. LOUIS – GEORGETOWN Sister Cities Committee

Project Points

·       The Cooperative Republic of Guyana ~a former British colony is one of four non-Spanish speaking territories located on the Continent of South America;

·       As the only independent State with English as its official language ~ Guyana is culturally part of the Caribbean community;

·       As the sole member of the Common-wealth of Nations geographically located on mainland South America ~ Guyana is part of the Latin American community; and

·       As the Secretariat headquarters of CARICOM charged with coordinating economic policies & development planning, and devising & instituting special projects for less developed nations in its jurisdiction ~ Guyana is the gateway between North and South America.

Project Objective

Sister Cities International traces its roots to 1956 when President

Eisenhower proposed a People-to-People citizen diplomacy initiative.  Sister Cities International partnerships inherently involve local government, business, and citizen volunteers in meaningful international exchange programs.

The St. Louis – Georgetown Sister City project includes hosting a cultural and economic delegation from Georgetown, Guyana, South America.  The primary objectives include, but are not limited to:

§       Facilitating communication between Guyanese and Metro STL-based entities with significant involvement in plant science/bio-technology; pharmaceutical(s); agriculture; food & beverage; and the athletic industries;

§       Development of import, export, and other logistics opportunities for STL-based entities seeking an inroad into South America;

§       Promotion of research opportunities specific to plant science and pharmaceutical development between STL-based colleges and universities and Guyana;

§       Species cataloging opportunities involving Guyana’s Iwokrama Rainforest, STL-based colleges/universities, and Shaw’s Botanical Garden and/or St. Louis Zoological Park;

§       Development of student and teacher exchanges on the Secondary School & College/University level inclusive of internships; and

§       Promotion and development of travel and tourism opportunities.

Support St. Louis industry and culture, build international relationships, have fun and create lasting memories by joining the St. Louis – Georgetown Sister Cities Committee.
